Glint (The Plated Prisoner Series Book 2) by Raven Kennedy

Blurb

For ten years, I’ve lived in a gilded cage inside King Midas’s golden castle. But one night changed everything.
Now I’m here, a prisoner of Fourth Kingdom’s army, and I’m not sure if I’m going to make it out of this in one piece. They’re marching to battle, and I’m the bargaining chip that will either douse the fire or spark a war.
At the heart of my fear, my worry, there’s him—Commander Rip.
Known for his brutality on the battlefield, his viciousness is unsurpassed. But I know the truth about what he is.
Fae.
The betrayers. The murderers. The ones who nearly destroyed Orea, wiping out Seventh Kingdom in the process. Rip has power sizzling beneath this skin and glinting spikes down his spine. But his eyes—his eyes are the most compelling of all.
When he turns those black eyes on me, I feel captive for an entirely different reason.
I may be out of my cage, but I’m not free, not even close. In the game of kings and armies, I’m the gilded pawn. The question is, can I out maneuver them?

My Review

Auren's growth is what I needed the most in this book. It was slow with a big ramp up at the end, but she did grow. In the first book, I felt she was weak in her actions towards others but I understood why. She's been a captive for the past 10 years. She believed the choices she made in her life were hers and not the manipulation of the man she believed loved her. In the next book, I hope to see her accept who she is and become stronger. No more weakness, no more being manipulated, and no more fear from people hurting her. It's time for Auren to rise.
We get to read Queen Malina's perspective in this book and I really appreciated and loved this. In the first book, we know she was not born with magic therefore she had to marry Midas because she was not fit to rule on her own. Queen Malina is also depicted as a villain towards Auren. After this book, I've come to realize she wasn't so much a villain but a victim, like Auren, of having her choices taken away from her. Just because she was not born with magic she had to watch King Midas turn her beloved kingdom into something she despises and can't stand anymore. She had to watch him bring Auren in and make the castle a place of her own. King Midas is the villain. King Midas is the one destroying everything. King Midas is the root of the problem. Now Queen Malina is taking back her rightful kingdom while he has gone to claim another. She is done with it all. Time for Queen Malina to rise. I would love to see her and Auren meet again but with the new found respect that their hate was not for one another but for the manipulation of Midas. Two strong female leads not fighting each other. Yes.
Lastly, the ending. Bravo Ms. Kennedy. I did not see that coming with King Rot.
I would love to see what comes next for King Rot, Auren, and Queen Malina.

I’d like to add that there isn’t romance in this book. I’m hoping that will come as Auren develops.
