Gild (The Plated Prisoner Series Book 1) by Raven Kennedy

Blurb

The fae abandoned this world to us. And the ones with power rule.
Gold.
Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold.
Even me.
King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I’m called his precious. His favored. I’m the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don’t leave the confines of the palace, I’m safe.
Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.
Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged. And I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong.
Because these bars I’m kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage. But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I’d never left.

My Review

I've read books by this author in the past and I've really enjoyed them. She is talented, a great story teller and her characters come to life. However, this book is a standout! The blurb doesn't do it justice. It contains mystery and intrigue with many twists and turns that keeps you reading. I absolutely love and appreciate the world building in this book. It made it so exciting to read.
My only negative remark would be at the end. There is a non-consensual sex scene (there is a warning in the author's note) where I was hoping the female lead, Auren, would be able to save another female character but it did not happen. What made it disappointing was the fact that Auren was able to do something so powerful afterwards that it made me ask why did the author write it that way? I would of felt more satisfaction if Auren saved her while revealing a part of what she is capable of. It still would have been shocking and powerful.
Even with that said, I am looking forward to the next book in this epic fantasy. I'm left with so many questions and the author holds all the answers. I want them. Please!
