My Review
There are two reasons why this book is getting 4 stars instead 5.
The first is the progression of the story. It's just too slow for me. Yes, there was action but then it ultimately didn't go anywhere. Days would pass with nothing happening or them waiting for the right time to do something. It just stalled out. It felt like the author had nothing for these parts of the book.
I was fine with the second book having a slower pace when it came to the story because we got a ton of character development with River and the men. I loved it and of course loved the hot steam that came with it.
I feel the author has nailed down the connection between them and needs to work on the flow of the story. Right now they feel like two separate entities.
The second is this book had a lot of unnecessary repetitive narration. There'd be one sentence of dialogue followed by paragraphs explaining that one sentence. Let the dialogue speak for itself. Books start to lose their grit when you have to give a pretty explanation as to why that character said that. Remember: show us, not tell us.
I'll end with the cliffhanger. It was really good, really intense and I have no idea what just happened. I am looking forward to the next book and I'm hoping it's got all the action and the grit.
